Jewellery Care Tips

Here's a list of hints and tips on how to care for your Margot & Mila jewellery, so it will look as lovely as the day you received it.

Wearing your jewellery

  • Skin and hair products can sometimes react with jewellery causing it to tarnish or corrode. We would advise removing all jewellery before applying cosmetics or perfume.

  • We would advise removing jewellery before exercising, cleaning or gardening as this will ensure your jewellery is not accidentally damaged or tarnished by perspiration.

  • We recommend removing jewellery before entering a pool, shower, or the sea as chlorine can cause tarnishing and water exposure in general can damage plating.

Storing your jewellery

  • Do not store jewellery on the windowsill or in the bathroom as damp and hot conditions could cause the jewellery to tarnish.

  • storing your jewellery in a zip lock bag as exposure to the air and environment can cause your jewellery to tarnish over time. Zip lock bags are a cheap way to keep your jewellery looking newer for longer.

  • Ultimately the best way to keep your jewellery looking at its best is by wearing it!

Cleaning your jewellery

  • We would recommend cleaning your jewellery from time to time to keep it looking at its best.

  • To clean your jewellery rub the piece gently with a soft lint-free cloth.

  • To brighten up your silver pieces (and remove any tarnishing) we recommend using a silver dip solution. We use the ones made by Haggerty. Simply follow the instructions and ensure you rinse your item thoroughly in warm water afterwards.

  • A silver polishing cloth (also by Haggerty) can be used aswell. Please take care not to use the cloth too often on gold plated jewellery as the plating will wear.

  • Take extra care when cleaning jewellery with gemstones and pearls and if unsure, do ask your local jeweller or contact us for further assistance.

Re-plating

  • All our plating is done in the UK at the Goldsmiths Centre and we pride ourselves on the endless positive feedback we get from our customers about how long it lasts.

  • Nevertheless gold plating will fade over time and the speed of this depends on how often pieces are worn and how they are looked after.

  • We are happy to re-plate any of your Margot & Mila items for a reasonable fee, please contact info@margotandmila.com for a quote. Turnaround will normally be approx. 2-4 weeks.

  • If you have additional items you would like to gold plate we are happy to take a look and help if we can. Again please email us details or photos and we will send quotes.
