A Short History of Hoops
Whether big or small, thick or thin, plain or textured, gold hoops have always been a strong symbol of femininity. Worn by many cultures across the ages, we have been reflecting on their deep history and significance at Margot & Mila HQ this week.
Archaeologists have found evidence of gold hoop earrings in the frescos and tombs of the Sumerians of Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago – now the regions of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Ancient Greeks and Romans also embraced gold hoops, with Julius Caesar turning them into a status symbol during his reign. Much like the Egyptians, they believed gold hoop earrings would bring the wearer closer to the Gods and considered them a symbol of beauty.
We have a huge selection of hoops at Margot & Mila in all different shapes and sizes. Our newest pair - the Rita hoops - are made from the highest quality recycled sterling silver and gold plated with a long lasting layer of 18 carat gold. All our plating is done at our master polishers in the Goldsmiths Centre in Hatton Garden - holders of the Royal Warrant no less!
Our new Rita Hoops are chunky, sassy and bold but also hollow and light as a feather so they won’t pull your ears down. We hope you like them too!
